Romance Movie

If you expect a happy ending in any romance movie, you may end up getting disappointed. Screenplay writers and directors are further pushing the genre's boundaries so that even bittersweet or tragic endings can be possible. This possibility, however, does not change the nature of a romance movie. A romance movie is still a film that has a plot that revolves around falling in love or making love survive. Though involving strong emotions like the drama movie, a romance movie is focused on romantic love itself. Because more women will more likely watch a romance movie, the genre is considered a type of "chick flick". From classic movies to modern romance movie types, rental video stores and movie shops are good places to find romance movie titles. This film type are also shown in cinemas and is also available through net movie downloads.

Themes tackled in the romance movie

Just as there are different kinds of love stories in real life, there are different themes tackled in the romance movie genre. Some of these recurrent romance movie themes are the following: age differences, love at first sight, spiritual love, obsessive/destructive love, unrequited love, forbidden love, passionate love and sacrificial love.

Some romance movie themes can be combined to create a more unique perspective. For example, forbidden love can be passionate or unrequited love can become self-destructive.

Early examples from the romance movie genre

The first film to be considered a portrayal of romance was only 20 seconds long. This was Thomas Edison's "The May Irwin Kiss", shot in 1896. It was a video footage of a couple kissing, the first in the romance movie genre. The silent movie era had its share of romance movies, such as "Camille" in 1915 and "Intolerance" in 1916.

Romance movie genre notables

Some notable on-screen love stories are not even under the romance movie genre. For example, Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" explores a complicated love story between a retired detective and a mysterious blonde. It touches on obsessive, tragic love. However, the film has strong elements that make it more suitably dubbed as a mystery or a suspense film.

Passionate romance in the middle of war is classic theme in the film "Casablanca". Aside from being a war movie, this classic film is always remembered as a romance movie as well. The much more recent 1997 romantic movie "Titanic" has made its mark as one of the greatest box office hits. Though based on the real-life Titanic tragedy, the audience becomes more aware of the personal tragedy of Rose and Jack.
